Abstract

This paper explores the two influential theories of religion and religious affiliation viz. Ian Reader's 'multiple religious belonging' (developed in relation to contemporary Japan) and Mary Beard's 'embedded religion' (developed in relation to ancient Rome). I argue that both concepts are useful in relation to early Indic source and demonstrate this with readings of Sanskrit, Pali and Ardhamagadhi materials.
