Abstract

Abstract Aim - To explore Dementia awareness and understanding communication tools. Outcomes - Identify effective communication strategies for sharing understanding of dementia - Identify key communication message media for different audiences. Content - The workshop will start with a dementia friend’s information session involving a number of communication strategies such as: - Bingo – questions posed and participants seek the correct answer - Who’s right? – participants are asked to make decisions about a case study - Making a nice cup of tea – how difficult is it? - Exploring dementia experiences through a bookcase analogy. It will then move on to developing a portrait of Dementia from the session using participant’s choice of media (clay, paints, sewing etc.) Finally the participants will identify key messages demonstrated from the portraits and if these are appropriate how and where they could be used. Rationale for content - Dementia friends training using this material has been presented to millions of people and has been considered effective by the developers the Alzheimer’s society funded by the UK government.The Dementia friend’s communication strategies seek to educate through interaction and enjoyment. This approach is further developed in the workshop by using creative media. It is acknowledged that people with dementia may have problems with expressing their thoughts through verbal and written language so to use other media may be useful for them (Barker and Board 2012). Also development of knowing can be achieved through the whole embodied experiential field so this workshop is attempting to access a window into the phenomenology field for the participants and facilitators. Relationship with conference theme: In the UK, there are 820,000 people diagnosed with dementia, costing £23 billion per year - more than cancer (two times more), heart disease (three times more) and stroke (four times more) (Alzheimer’s society 2010). It is therefore important that healthcare providers are able to identify, organise and prepare services to support this growing care need (Barker and Board 2012). Recently there have been a number of initiatives to develop awareness, understanding and compassionate responses to people with dementia and their carers (DH 2009, 2015, PMC 2012) supported by education and training frameworks (Scottish Government 2011, HEDN, 2013, PenCLAHRC, 2014, NHS England, Skills for Care and Skills for health 2015). Whilst these frameworks give health and social educators 56 and trainers clear guidance on what topics need to be included there is little guidance on what media is most effective or what it is achieving. Some evidence has demonstrated the Dementia friend’s communication strategies are effective, such as personal comments on their website and with them receiving the Wales innovative communications award in 2015. This has also been supported by Mitchell et al (2016) in their study with undergraduate nursing students. This workshop seeks to develop an understanding for those who work with people with dementia and their families about how the messages within the current media may be perceived to help guide their choice of media in their interactions and teaching.
