Abstract

Reflecting on a range of qualitative research studies, this workshop considers the ways in which creative and visual approaches can be drawn on to gain an understanding of the everyday lives of women and girls from their unique subjective perspectives. In these projects participants’ experiential accounts were facilitated by creative activities, which enabled them to reflect in detail on the micro interactions of their lives. This allowed space for thinking through their subjective, mundane, but important, experiences that operate alongside, and interact with, more structural changes. Research techniques included artefacts, collaging, drawing, photoeliciation, emotion stickers, timelines and sandboxing. The opportunities and limitations of creative approaches will be considered as well as the practicalities of ‘doing’ visual research in the field, and the associated implications for ethical practice. The workshop will offer an opportunity for participants to try a collaging and drawing activity to explore their possible future selves and we will discuss experiences of creating visual data, and the potentialities and difficulties of applying the technique in participatory, visual and creative research.
