Abstract

The Mössbauer spectra of pyrite, marcasite, pyrrhotite, greigite and mackinawite which are all sulphides of iron have been taken at room temperature. The first two sulphides in this group showed no magnetic hyperfine structure whereas the latter three did. Chemical isomer shifts, quadrupole interactions, and magnetic hyperfine fields have been determined from these spectra and the relationships between these parameters and possible structures and spin states of the iron have been discussed.
