Abstract

This is a study of the material environment ofthe shared lounge within a private developmentof retirement apartments, designed to supportindependent living (facilitating effective ageingin place). Architectural drawings are knownto describe form, material and space (asdesigned), but can also be used to record howan environment is used (as-lived). Participantobservations and a photographic survey furtherreveal an ‘ecology of things’ and ways in whicholder people – acting as resident designers– inhabit the lounge, reshaping it to suittheir needs. Proposed design enhancementsrespond to user feedback, yet work within theexisting frameworks - grids, layouts, unit mixes, strategies - deployed by the developer provider.
