Abstract

At Cardiff University School of Physics and Astronomy, we have implemented a research group based teaching model for our six MSc programmes which emphasises project-based learning, peer-accountability, and 'realism in practice'. Students are co-located with MSc coordinators and support staff in dedicated teaching and learning facilities, undertake student-lead integrated projects, and engage with a series of realistic exercises and group work that emphasise and develop research-essential skills. This model has been highly effective in developing confident practicing research scientists over the past four academic years. To date, our total MSc cohort has comprised fewer than thirty students. As we transition to larger projected cohort sizes, changing logistical and pedagogical requirements are shaping how we will develop our teaching model for the future. In this talk we summarise our research group teaching model, critique its current implementation, and set out our programme design for the upcoming academic year.
