Abstract

This paper describes the development of EMTP-ATP models of the emerging Prime and G3-PLC power line communication standards. The transmitters, consisting of a highly configurable orthogonal frequency division multiplexing MODEM, are built in the native Fortran based programming language of the EMTP-ATP. All associated mapping, filtering and quadrature mixing are performed within two models which are subsequently coupled into the network. An advantage of directly implementing Prime and G3-PLC within the EMTP-ATP is the ability to assess performance on realistic network models and under adverse conditions such as during lightning strikes and switching events. In addition, it is also possible to assess performance of several transmitters operating simultaneously on the same network. A summary of results of the simulations show, firstly, a slight difference in performance between Prime and G3-PLC due to the different parameters specified by the respective standards and secondly, the large effect of the assumed termination conditions of the branches.
