Abstract

Philosopher Karsten Harries proposes that the task of Architecture is that of helping to articulate a common ethos in order to help us dwell in a disorienting world. This paper draws on this proposition to closely track the slow, complex, messy processes underpinning the community-led redevelopment of a small civic space in Grangetown, Cardiff. Through a variation of co-produced action research and participatory design that takes an appreciative inquiry approach, the minutia of the lived experiences of this live community-led project were extensively documented and then analysed through principles of grounded theory. The development oflong term partnerships between Grangetown and Cardiff University have co-produced an annual cycle of public celebrations and collaborative research between residents and architectural students. Preceding the architectural design or even a design brief for the Grange Pavilion project and gardens, the contributions of architectural students, educators and researchers towards one project over a five-year period are explored as everyday practices and interpretations which continually redefine, readjust and respond to actual realities. This project emphasises the significant role that architectural education can play in supporting the incremental, extended and open ended participatory process of developing a common ethos, long before a design brief or a physical construct is pursued.
