Abstract

The combined heat and power (CHP) generation can be operated flexibly to provide valuable services to utilities by mitigating the impact of intermittent renewables. The owners of CHP, e.g., industrial manufacturers, are motivated to take this advantage as it provides clear financial benefits. A fast change of power generation is required at second time scale for services such as frequency response. However, the relatively slow response speed of power generation significantly limits the capability of the CHP to provide such services. To break this limitation, a coordinative strategy is proposed to control the power output of CHP and the embedded battery which is conventionally used to support engine start-up. The function of the battery is extended to rapidly compensate the power difference between required power response and the power generation of CHP. Moreover, a filter-based controller is designed to operate the battery for smoothing CHP generation, which effectively helps improve the lifetime of CHP and mitigate the impact on the gas network. Intensive simulation results under different scenarios are presented to show the performance of the proposed control strategy in improving power response speed and lifetime of CHP and also mitigating the effects of providing grid services on the gas network.
