Abstract

The first study of private prayers as play scripts, miniature fictions requiring the reader to enter, imaginatively, into an unfamiliar character, just as an actor might enter into her part An original approach that treats the prayers in Shakespeare's history plays as more than merely phatic or intensifiers Engages with hundreds of primary texts on how to pray, published during Shakespeare's working life Reconstructs the culture of private devotion, inviting the reader to see the world through the eyes of an early modern Protestant at prayer
