Abstract

André Jolivet (1905-1974) was among the most influential composers of the last century, renowned for his combination of innovative language with expressions of the sacred and incantatory. Yet, the broader context of his compositional aesthetic has rarely been explored and significant processes of his musical construction have often been overlooked. Caroline Rae, Julian Anderson and Caroline Potter present new research investigating Jolivet’s style and technique to explore his placing within twentieth-century music as a whole.
