Abstract

Quickly evolving technologies implicate architectural production and representation. The technology of 3D scanning allows drawing parallels between historical and contemporary images. This paper seeks to highlight the vectoral nexus between the past and the present by looking into the theory of ‘linee occulte’ (hidden lines), a proposition first devised by the architect Sebastiano Serlio (1475-1554), which connected the material world to the neo-platonic one. Serlio geometrically employed these lines to create architectural meaning and allowed showing mastery of skill through emulation. Thus, linee occulte form a symbiosis between a tool-of-doing and an instrument-of-knowing as a technological utilization as well as a narrating principle. Engaging with Serlio’s drawings through 3D scanning allows outlining his principle of lines. Interacting technologically with historic drawings allows forming a new creative ontology of images through reading Serlio’s theory which question the representative state of architecture by using emulation as an analytical tool.
