Abstract

This research project analyses the phenomenon of urbanity in late-Modern public spaces and potential urban transformations of this suburban areas in Europe, from the zoning plans to specific suburban patterns. It is focused on the sustainability of public spaces in sprawl areas after the WWII Reconstruction period, based on the case study of free spaces in paradigmatic urban experiments. On the one hand, this project will explore new techniques of sustainable urban design in sprawls; on the other hand, stimulate the public debate on sustainable urban systems and new models of transformation of dysfunctional public spaces by formulating new design guidelines and simulations of new suburban configurations and types.
