Abstract

The article attempts to make a connection between narratives of naga veneration in the Chinese Buddhist travelogues and individual epigraphic and art historical evidence from Mathura and Ajanta. It argues for a distinction between a general concept of naga veneration and the specific rituals dedicated to individual nagas in Ancient India.
