Abstract

The project explored the ability of gamification to engage citizens in the collaborative discovery of circular economy concepts through the circular citizens and how they can contribute to the transition to a circular economy through social innovation. A card game called “Circular Families” was developed by embedding findings from a previous case study analysis on social innovations for a circular economy. Then it was tested through game sessions with citizens, communities, social enterprises and students to measure knowledge exchange. The game can be freely downloaded from the project webpage to be self-made. Each player aims to collect all 4 members from one of 13 ‘circular family’ groups that represent 5 urban sectors: building, product, food, green infrastructure, and mobility. To form a family, during each turn, players must decide on a circular action which could be ‘take’, ‘make’, ‘use’, or ‘recover’ to close the resource loop in a family. Actions provide social innovation best practices implemented by citizens to promote circular practices. After having played, players can select their preferred strategy and identify the circular citizen they would like to become. Then, through the Circular Citizen-ID cards, they can discover the features, challenges and impact of their preferred character.
