Abstract

In this entry, the term “digital” refers to technologies such as social media, smart devices, and gaming platforms in recognition that these are “embedded, embodied, everyday phenomenon” (Hine, 2015, p. 1) in contrast to earlier conceptualizations of the Internet as a somewhat disembodied “cyber” or “virtual” world (Markham, 2018). Digital, therefore, is understood as something that is always, already social. Informed by this conceptualization of the digital as omnipresent and existing beyond the presence of devices and platforms, this entry considers how to engage with everyday experiences of the digital that traverse online and offline spaces. Specifically, it outlines how working in the creative mode can foster curious and affirmative spaces for engaging with the complexities and contradictions of an ever-changing digital sexual age.
