Abstract

What are the main benefits and challenges of a media ecology theory to study social movements and activism? This chapter answer this question by exploring the relevance of a media ecology theory to study the emerging area of research which I define as MovAct, i.e. the convergence of social movement and activism studies. I reflect on the major strengths and risks of this approach, explaining my flexible and impure view on the topic, and zooming in on key priorities for future inquiry. The chapter starts by explaining the levels of engagement and variety of media ecology theories and outlines how this conceptual diversity has been mobilized by MovAct studies. Then, it addresses the key findings of the research that has relied on the media ecology gaze, fleshing out challenges and areas of disagreement. In the conclusions, future horizons of inquiry into the media ecology approach and the MovAct area are illustrated.
