Abstract

There is a growing interest in vulnerable narcissistic leadership and the implications of this form of behaviour for workplace relationships. However, the ways by which we understand the behaviours of vulnerable narcissists and particularly vulnerable narcissistic leaders have yet to be fully explored. We argue that followers struggle to make sense of their leaders who show vulnerable narcissistic behaviour. To this end, we develop a behavioural scale which delineates the key behaviours of vulnerable narcissistic leaders – providing one of the first accounts of this form of leadership within organizations. Here, we report the qualitative study leading to the development of the Narcissistic Leaders’ Behaviours (VNLB) scale. We interviewed 17 individuals drawn from the education sector who worked with vulnerable narcissists, coded the interviews, and extracted behavioural items, which were subsequently rated by experts. Our study can inform individuals and organisation about red-flag behaviours to better identify vulnerable narcissistic leaders.
