Abstract

It is estimated that around 15% of the UK population are neurodivergent (1) and around 1% have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (2). However, very limited research has been conducted to understand the prevalence of ASD in doctors, with even less exploring ASD or traits amongst medical students. Studies that do are primarily quantitative and investigate links between autistic traits and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). ASD is associated with mental health disorders, particularly anxiety and depression. Early identification of those with ASD is critical to ensure structures are in place to optimise abilities and ensure appropriate support is provided while training. Therefore, this research focuses on exploring the prevalence of ASD diagnoses and autistic traits in UK medical students, as well as seeking to identify the impact this has on students’ experiences of training and any associated support needs.
