Abstract

Title: Interprofessional Simulation Scenario writing workshop Background, aims and objectives Interprofessional simulation is fundamental to high functioning healthcare teams and can assist in the reduction of errors and increased patient satisfaction1. A well designed simulation scenario is crucial in the delivery of high-quality simulation-based education and requires appropriate planning, consideration of the prospective learners and the intended learning outcomes. Interprofessional scenarios need to be robust and meaningful to all involved and should be co-produced by faculty from the same professional groups as the target learners2. Additionally, knowledge of educational principles, and best practice in both simulation and clinical practice is needed3. Scenario design must also consider the modality and fidelity of simulation, faculty members, use of supplementary resources, moulage, other participants, simulators, and/or standardized patients. These findings from a review of the literature informed the development of a national scenario writing template. The development of this template originated from a request by the interprofessional simulation community for a standardised template following several national webinars. The aim of this workshop will be to prepare delegates for interprofessional simulation scenario writing using a national simulation scenario writing template. Learning objectives • To practise scripting an interprofessional simulation scenario using the template • To reflect on the experience of developing an interprofessional simulation scenario • To discuss the benefits and challenges of each scripting phase/component to meet all professional groups needs Session description Delegates will be first given an overview of the workshop, learning outcomes and expectations (10 mins). They will be introduced to the simulation scenario writing template to be utilised (10 mins). Following this, some tips on writing a successful interprofessional scenario will be provided (10 mins). A scenario brief will be given and interprofessional working groups established. Time will be allocated for writing a simulation scenario with experts at hand to support and facilitate this activity (60 mins). The workshop will adopt an experiential learning approach allowing hands on practice of interprofessional simulation scenario writing whilst encouraging reflection. Target audience All healthcare professionals, simulation technicians and support roles. Level This is an introductory/intermediate level workshop aimed at delegates who are new or wish to improve their scenario writing skills. Maximum number of participants 25-30 delegates Equipment required and specific room set-up AV resources (computer, screen) and a room which will enable small group work and discussion.
