Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in healthcare, showing a significant potential and requirement for advancements and adoption in healthcare education. This chapter conducts a systematic review of papers which have empirically analysed the how AI has been applied across the healthcare education. Owing to the fast pace of the field, the review considers papers written between 2018 and 2024. After screening 4,653 papers, 40 papers were finalised for the review. The key areas where AI is applied include teaching support, evaluation of training, assessments, feedback and personalising education. Studies also explored the effectiveness of AI through qualitative and quantitative methods and controlled experiments. Results show a growing belief in the use of AI in healthcare education. The chapter discusses the types of AI used, the fields, the methodology of implementation and the user experiences. Also, this chapter discusses the implications of AI adoption for future policymakers, showing the opportunities and challenges associated with the widespread implementation of AI technologies in healthcare education. Factors such as workforce training, data privacy, and regulatory frameworks are examined, considering the evolving field of AI-enabled healthcare education. By critically evaluating the results and insights from the reviewed papers, this chapter aims to inform policy decisions aimed at creating a responsible and effective curriculum, thus contributing to Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 4: Health and Good Health and Wellbeing and Quality Education.
