Abstract

Aim: In Wales, one of the government’s strategies to address the health inequality experienced by people with ID has been to provide incentives to general practitioners (GPs) to offer annual health checks. This study aimed to monitor health check uptake during the first 3 years of the initiative and to develop a health check auditing system. Method: Data were collected on the number of health checks undertaken in each Welsh health area. Data were based on GP submissions to the government for payment under the health check incentive scheme. An initial tranche of data from the new auditing system was also collected. Results: Forty-one percent of people received a check in the third year of the initiative. This was a 43% increase compared with the first year. There was wide regional variation. Results of preliminary analysis of data arising from checks will be presented, e.g. BMI categories, health conditions, lifestyle. Conclusion: Uptake has increased each year but regional variation still needs to be addressed. Systems developed to integrate health checking within GP auditing software have enabled a more in-depth analysis of the health of people with ID across a large geographical area (total general population, £2.9 million).
