Abstract

Stirring of perthiolated β-cyclodextrin in water yields cross-linked hollow capsules ca. 50 nm in diameter. The capsules are made up of disulfide-bridged cyclodextrin units. Large molecules (e.g., Reichardt's dye) can be trapped within the capsules and released back into solution by reductive cleavage of the disulfide bridges.
