Abstract

This volume details of almost 17,000 Iron Age, Roman and early Medieval coins from 289 individual find spots in the county of Cornwall, including 52 hoards (1 Greek, 1 Iron Age, 46 Roman and 3 Anglo-Saxon) and 21 excavated assemblages. The gazetteers of coins from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly include descriptions of the circumstances of each find and summaries of the coins recovered, while four indexes listing entries by parish, find type and period mean finds can be located quickly and easily. Also, a discussion of the output of the mint located at Launceston between the 10th and 12th centuries describes one of the few occasions when an official mint was in operation in Cornwall. Ancient and Early Medieval Coins from Cornwall & Scilly is one of only 3 regional numismatic corpora from Britain (joining NW England and Wales) and this collection will be an important source of information for those interested in the archaeology and history of south-western Britain from later Prehistory to the Medieval period.
