Abstract

Sited within a Grade 1 registered Historic Garden and Landscape of Special Historic Value, the design of the Environmental Discovery Centre in Margam Park, Port Talbot needed to respect the integrity of the Estate, whilst celebrating its history, creation and design. The £5.5M scheme is a residential and educational facility for school children and adults alike to experience the natural environment through the Fields Studies Council, as well as an important part of the development of the visitor attractions within the park. The scheme takes on the form of a series of small pavilions which are linked, creating a route through the site. The pavilions are raised onto piloti, touching the ground lightly and sitting within the trees for visitors to explore. It was also important that the building aimed for ‘zero-carbon’ emissions using a combination of passive design measures and renewable energy technologies.
