Abstract

A simple solar capture facade can be made by covering standard profiled wall elements with glass sheeting. Solar energy heats the air in the profile channels and generates air movement, while the insulated wall prevents uncontrolled heating of the building. A mathematical model has been developed to predict the exit air temperature, air mass flow, air velocity and power output from such a system. Initial experimental work has taken place to verify the air flow component of the model. This has involved predicting the pressure drop along the length of four prototype ducts using the Darcy equation. These predictions have been found to over estimate the system pressure drop. it was found that by using the Darcy equations with an adjusted hydraulic diameter (increased by 9.75%) gave a better match to the actual data for the geometries and flows considered.
