Abstract

This article provides a general background to our research project on Islam and young Bangladeshis in Bangladesh and the UK. It discusses the changing nature of the Bangladeshi family in the UK and Bangladesh, and considers the structure of Islamic reform movements in the two countries. While many of the same Islamic movements operate in some form both in Bangladesh and in the UK, there are obvious differences in the social and political context of Islam in these two countries. I attempt to sketch these differences and provide some initial analysis of the consequences for the situation of young Bangladeshis in these two overall contexts.
