Abstract

t is with much pride that I welcome you to the 40th volume of the Journal of Dentistry. The first volume of the Journal appeared in 1972: 40 years ago, or half a lifetime. Over the past 40 years, Journal of Dentistry has achieved much, and grown in international reputation and presence to become the leading international journal in the field of Restorative Dentistry. A review of the titles of the articles published in the first volume of Journal of Dentistry reveals reference to papers dealing with the caries experience of adolescents,1 bactericidal activity of various agents,2 methods for testing dental ceramics,3 and abrasion of composites.4 Whilst these papers may be regarded as dated in their approach when compared to contemporary methods, they reveal that the Journal of Dentistry then, as it does now, focussed on publishing studies that were of direct relevance to the practice of clinical dentistry, and in particular, Restorative Dentistry. The Journal of Dentistry has, and will continue, to make a priority of publishing novel, high-quality oral and dental research, of direct impact to the practice of clinical dentistry. With this volume, I celebrate a personal milestone, of having successfully completed my first year as Editor-in-Chief of this prestigious Journal. It has been an honour to serve the readership of the Journal and our many authors and reviewers. Over the past year, we have published many high quality research papers of clinical significance. Some, which have featured in the international media, have provided greater illumination on the aetiology and development of tooth surface loss.5 Others have focussed on practice-based research, revealing interesting information on selections of restorative techniques for management of lesions of caries.6 Appropriately focussed and novel research in dental materials remains another of our strong features. Our focus continues on mainstream dental materials research such as advances in ceramic materials [7] and [8] and bonding systems. [9], [10] and [11] Recent dental materials research in Journal of Dentistry has developed to include advances in the ‘biological’ effectiveness of dentine-bonding systems and adaptation of dentine biology. [12], [13] and [14] The Journal of Dentistry's successful collaboration with the Society for Color and Appearance in Dentistry goes from strength to strength in the challenging international dental research arena. There is regular submission of high quality colour related manuscripts to justify the publication of two supplement issues of Journal of Dentistry per year, appearing under the title of the Journal of Color and Appearance in Dentistry. In a similar way to Journal of Dentistry, the Journal of Color and Appearance in Dentistry has established itself as the leading international journal in its field. I am very proud of the strong collaboration that exists with the Society of Color and Appearance in Dentistry, and in particular with Dr Rade Paravina who serves as Editor of these supplement issues. Notable publications from the Journal of Color and Appearance in Dentistry this year include the effects of enamel crystallography on tooth shade,15 development of a shade guide for gingival colours,16 and the effect of water sorption on the colour stability of composites.17 Notwithstanding the success story of Journal of Dentistry, the challenge for the Journal is to continue to publish novel high-quality research in its 40th volume and beyond. We cannot rest on the success of our history. Our challenges are to ask new questions, to investigate new practices and materials, and to continue with an open and enquiring mind to consider the treatments and care we provide our patients. As we begin this 40th volume, we must ensure that the future of Journal of Dentistry is as exemplary as its past, and that Journal of Dentistry remains the journal of reference for leaders, clinicians, researchers and teachers in the fields of Clinical and Restorative Dentistry.
