Abstract

'The Personal Narrative of the Sufferings and Escape of William A. Hall' details the trials and tribulations of William Anderson Hall, an escaped slave from Tennessee who was residing in Cardiff in the 1860s. William’s text is significant because it is one of only a small handful of fugitive slave narratives published within Wales in the English language. This paper examines William’s text in two contexts. Firstly, it locates it within the genre of the fugitive slave narrative, which became increasingly popular amongst anti-slavery audiences in Wales during the first half of the 19th century. Secondly, the paper examines the way in which William’s text provides significant insight into the mechanics of the anti-slavery lobby in Wales, and locates it in particular in the context of anti-slavery campaigns and Wesleyan Methodist activity in Cardiff during the American Civil War. Indeed, the dynamics of support for anti-slavery in the town itself in these years have not yet been explored by historians.
