Abstract

The present paper reports results from a secondary analysis of data from the Bristol Stress and Health at Work Study. In the first, analysis combinations of factors reflecting the physical environment at work (e.g. perceived noise) and working hours (e.g. nightwork) were considered. In the second set of analyses combinations of job demand, decision latitude and social support at work were examined. In the final analyses a measure was derived which represented the total number of negative factors present at work. The first two sets of analyses largely revealed main effects of the factors, with some evidence of additive effects when variables were considered in combination. The analysis of the total negative factors score showed a clear dose response between the number of negative factors present and negative health outcomes.
