Abstract

François Lesure, doyen of French musicology, former head librarian at the Département de Musique of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, professor of musicology at the École pratique des hautes études, former president of the editorial committee for Debussy's Æuvres complètes, died in 2001. Over the course of his highly productive career he nurtured many scholars, both French and foreign nationals. This collection of essays is written by a number of Anglophone academics who all came under his tutelage at one point or another, who experienced the benefits of Lesure's vast knowledge and varied interests and appreciated his ability to foster exchange and communication between scholars. The essays are centered on two corner stones of the French musical canon, Berlioz and Debussy, both of whom figured largely in the academic career of Lesure himself. Jeanice Brooks prefaces the volume, sharing her own personal experience of Lesure-the-man and Lesure-the-scholar. Roy Howat contributes an afterword in which he too pays tribute to Lesure's erudite qualities as chair of the editorial board of the Debussy Æuvres complètes, how the project finally came to fruition under Lesure's guidance and its subsequent rollercoaster fortunes. He describes how Lesure has found a more than worthy successor in the person of Denis Herlin, and that the future of the project is probabty brighter than it has ever been before.
