Abstract

The expected optical depths of the central regions of optically thick galaxies are determined as a function of radius for five galaxies with well-observed radial gas distributions in order to gain an insight into the dramatic optical depth effects on luminosity profiles. It is found that in all cases examined, which include galaxies with a wide range of ISM densities, the extrapolated central surface brightnesses of the disks are brightened by about 0.8 mag. Galaxies with Type II luminosity profiles, i.e., those with a dip or shoulder near the center, relative to the inward extrapolation of the outer disk component, have 'normal' bulge plus disk profiles after the absorption corrections are applied. As a check on this 'missing light', a comparison with profiles obtained from IRAS data is presented. In all cases there is an excellent correspondence between the light lost from the B band, as predicted by the present optically thick disk models, and that reemitted in the far infrared.
