Abstract

The volume contains chapters by researchers who were members of the specialist teams involved in the design and development of the 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey. It outlines the key innovations in this, the fifth survey in the WERS/WIRS series. All papers outline the process that led to the development of the innovations, the research literature from which they emanate, and how the key ideas underpinning them were translated into questions and questionnaires within the WERS2004 framework. Every set of authors also makes recommendations for further change that might be useful should a further WERS survey be contemplated. By highlighting the constructive process through which important innovations were introduced into the WERS2004, it is likely to form a template for future survey research. By indicating the rationales behind the development of key innovations in the survey it is likely to short-circuit the learning process for those attempting to use the new features in their own research.
