Abstract

Measurements of the overall optical efficiency of both single and composite element bolometers have been made. Optimisation of the impurity concentration has given single element efficiencies as high as 33%. Construction of composite bolometers using bismuth film absorbers on quartz substrates has reduced the overall efficiency even though they offer intrinsically higher optical absorption and greater surface area. We have attributed this result to a thermal mismatch between the absorber and the thermometric sensor. Experiments with surface implanted Ge substrate absorbers have produced optical efficiencies of 40%. This indicates an improved thermal transfer efficiency, which is to be expected since similar materials are used in this composite structure.
