Abstract

The decline of Sphagnum imbricatum on Borth Bog during the period 1973–1977 is considered to be the result of a severe fire in 1974 although drought may have been an accessory factor. The data suggest some ability to recover from burning if left undisturbed for a sufficient length of time; at least one decade is suggested as a minimum. There is a strong correlation between hummock height and area although this relationship declines with increasing humnlock size. Fire damages the strong correlation between total hummock complex area and living area; there is evidence to suggest that this correlation gradually returns with time, a possible indication of regrowth. It is suggested that although the species is at the edge of its distributional range its decline at this site is almost entirely due to non-climatic factors.
