Abstract

South Korea is frequently described as “the most wired country in the world” and, as such, as one of the world's leading “webocracies.” OhmyNews , typically described as an “online newspaper,” shares features with the Independent Media Centers but has different imperatives. Its aim since its launch in February 2000 has been to call on ordinary people to provide a form of reporting that serves as an alternative to the mainstream, conservative media while striving to ensure that the news site generates a financial profit. “My goal was to say farewell to 20th-century Korean journalism, with the concept that every citizen is a reporter,” declared Oh Yeon Ho, the site's founder. “The professional news culture has eroded our journalism,” he added, “and I have always wanted to revitalize it. Since I had no money, I decided to use the Internet, which has made this guerrilla strategy possible.” ...
