Abstract

A quasi-optical (QO) free-space test bench, based ontwo dual reflector Compact Test Range (CTR) systems, has been developed to characterise the RF properties ofmaterials and QO components used in mm-waveastronomical instrumentation. While this facility hasbeen designed to operate for several spectralbandwidths, in the first instance measurements havebeen performed in the W-band (75-110 GHz). Wepresent the modelled and measured performance of thetest bench and the procedure for calibrating andmeasuring samples under test. First measured results ofthe field across a 10 cm quiet zone indicate a maximumintensity variation of -4.5 dB and a maximum phasevariation of 7°. Measurements of the cross-polarisationindicate higher levels than were predicted. A free-spacecalibration method has been developed based on the useof 3 calibration standards (Thru-Reflect-Line). Initialmeasurements of the reflectivity and transmittance for arange of materials have been performed, allowing thededuction of the refractive index.
