Abstract

We report on the results from observations of Uranus and Neptune obtained with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) Long Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) during the routine phase of the mission. Spectra are presented which cover the wavelength range from 43 mu m to 90 mu m with a resolution of 0.29 mu m and from 90 mu m to 197 mu m with a resolution of 0.6 mu m. A high signal to noise ratio was achieved by combining the data of several identical calibration observations. Both Uranus and Neptune have smoothly varying continuum spectra. The brightness temperature of Neptune lies between 58 K and 62 K in the observed wavelength range. The surface brightness ratio of Neptune with respect to Uranus amounts between 60 mu m and 190 mu m to 0.97 +/- 0.02. We compare the overall shape of the measured spectra with models and discuss possible reasons for the small, but significant, differences between observation and theory.
