Abstract

Chile is a country with a high energy dependency. In 2011 92% of the fossil fuels consumed were imported. These represent 68% of Chile’s primary supply. At the same time 60% of the population experience average indoor temperatures of less than 15°C and 80% of the housing stock have problems of high condensation and resultant mold growth. A study of household budgets in 2006 showed that three fifths of the population suffer from fuel poverty. In addition the high usage of firewood, often of poor quality, burnt in inefficient stoves and fires, produces atmospheric pollution with most of the cities of the central valley and their surrounding countryside declared saturated by particulate matter MP10. This paper presents the work of the Laboratory of Energy and Lighting of the Universidad Andrés Bello which has shown, with measurements in physical test chambers, that straw bale construction can provide high levels of internal hygrothermal comfort than those of a dwelling that meets current Chilean thermal building regulations. At the same time this type of construction can improve the energy efficiency of the dwelling with an approximate energy saving of 29%. Additionally straw bale construction reuses agricultural waste and has an aesthetic similar to the historical adobe architecture of Chiles Central Valley.
