Abstract

What ‘Participation in Recreational activities’ means for disabled children and youth will be explored with two case studies. The aim will be to hear their voice about their ‘Lifeworld’ which is different to that of a typically developing child but can still be fun and enjoyable. Enabling their voice to be heard gives them agency and empowers them to achieve higher expectations than previously thought, despite their more limited choices. The hybridity of their experiences including information technologies and psychopharmaceuticals reveals a complexity yet to be fully understood. The challenge for healthcare practitioners is to balance the ‘fixing’ of the child or young person’s disability with their need to participate in a meaningful way in what they enjoy doing.
