Abstract

ODP Leg 125 drilled nine sites in the Mariana and lzu-Bonin forearcs. Six sites were located on or adjacent to serpentinite seamounts between the outer-arc high and the trench, four (sites778-78 1) on the Conical Seamount in the Mariana forearc and two (sites 783-784) on the Torishima Seamount in the lzu-Bonin forearc. The remaining sites (782, 785 and 786) were located along the eastern edge of the lzu-Bonin forearc basin. At site 786, 650 m of boninites and andesite-dacite volcanics belonging to the Eocene basement of the outer arc high have been drilled. Results of Leg ODP 125 will permit a better understanding of the forearc evolution with references to the underlying mantle, the volcanic basement history, the sedimentary infill, the fluid fluxes and the thermal regimes.
