Abstract

The low educational attainment of looked-after children and young people has become an issue of widespread international concern, as have the educational and career trajectories of care leavers. This paper draws from a Welsh Government funded study that explored the educational experiences of looked after children and young people in the Welsh context. The study employed visual and creative methods, as well as interviews and focus groups, to enable an understanding of the everyday lives of young people and their relationships with carers, social workers and teachers. The paper focuses on the ways in which young people’s aspirations can be both enabled and discouraged in their interactions with key professionals; and makes some suggestions to engender more positive outcomes.
