Abstract

The perfect non-executive, or director, may not exist. Instead, individuals may perform different roles depending on their abilities. Four distinct roles are identified, but how can the right mix be obtained? This paper explores the roles and performance of non-executive directors. This is a timely subject, given the current economic downturn and significant array of corporate collapses world-wide across the last year, so the first section of the paper briefly sets out the scene against which these issues are being considered.
