Abstract

Cell counts of the colorless sulfur bacterium Achromatium oxaliferum were made from surface layer samples of littoral sediment cores of Lake Stechlin. They were detected only in the upper 15 mm of the sediment, where the conditions were normally oxic. The cell numbers reached up to 10-4/cm-3 sediment and decreased with depth. Although the sediment surface from profundal region also remained oxic throughout the year, only low numbers were observed here. A striking feature were the size differences of the cells within one population ranging from 10 times 30 to 35 times 95 mu-m. Starvation lead to a disappearance of the accumulated calcite crystals within the cells, while the sulfur droplets remained.
