Abstract

Alexander II Zabinas (ca. 150–123 bce), parentage unknown, was a pretender to the Seleucid throne who was sent to Syria in 128 with the support of Ptolemy VIII as a rival to Demetrios II. After defeating the latter, he was king in Syria from roughly 128–123 bce, though his reign was marked by instability after the withdrawal of his Ptolemaic support in favor of Antiochos VIII Grypos. The precise extent of his control over the Seleucid realm is unknown, though persistent rumors of his illegitimacy and rival claimants to the throne suggest his dominion was limited at best.
