Abstract

This chapter presents further neurological evidence relating to the role of emotions in individual psychology. It contrasts accounts of the neural structure of emotional systems that posit a general purpose ‘limbic’ system which subserves all our emotional capacities, and those that posit distinct specialized systems which subserve distinct ‘affect programs’. The chapter presents data from neuroimaging studies that suggest there are distinct neural systems for responding to signals of fear and disgust and other emotions.
