Abstract

Faïence, more correctly termed “Egyptian faïence,” is a non-clay ceramic material made up of silica and covered with an alkaline glaze, most commonly in a blue or blue-green color. It is known from the Egyptian Predynastic period through Roman times and has continued into modern times in parts of the Near East (for summaries, see Vandiver 1983; Nicholson and Peltenburg 2000).
