Abstract

The paper will present recent advances in the area of corrected Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics [1-4] and its application to simulate debris flows. Debris flows following for instance landslides are complex phenomena that are currently difficult to model using standard techniques. The unpredictability of the path followed by the flow and the large distances travelled make this problem difficult to model using Eulerian finite element techniques. In addition, the use of Lagrangian finite element methods leads to highly distorted meshes and complex when expensive remeshing is constantly required. Consequently, particle based meshless methods such as SPH provide an attractive alternative. The paper will describe the derivation of the governing corrected SPH equations starting from a variational or Hamiltonian structure with additional dissipative terms to represent the complex constitutive behaviour of the debris. In addition, to simplify the analysis, the shallow water hypothesis will be used. In this way the resulting model becomes 2-dimensional and in effectt, highly compressible. The resulting compressibility leads to large time steps when a standard explicit time stepping scheme is used. At the same time, however, the compressibility makes it necessary to constantly adjust the smoothing length of the particle scheme. The paper will discuss how to introduce a variable smoothing length in the context of the variational formulation. A number of academic examples on simple analytical terrains will be used to demonstrate and validate the resulting formulation. More complex topologies relating to realistic terrains will also be presented to demonstrate the potential of the techniques presented.
