Abstract

This article introduces the Phoenix development in Dortmund, Germany. The scheme is presented as a good case study of a comprehensive and sustainable renewal project. It is good because of the commitment of planners and developers to a long term renewal strategy for the site within the region, and the quality of the emerging diverse range of developments. The contribution made to regeneration by the design of the landscape, the ecology and urban design is emphasised. The ambiguity of the public costs of such a development is referred to. The specific features of the emerging development are introduced.
