Abstract

The Squire of Low Degree is a Middle English popular romance distinctive in its engagement with generic conventions and for the lack of any manuscript exemplar. It has elements of a Fair Unknown narrative, and is saturated with but also subverts romance tropes in ways that have led some scholars to consider it a parody of romance. Others, however, have also read the text as invested in serious concerns relevant to readerships during the Wars of the Roses or early Tudor period when it was likely composed.
